NORTH BERGEN — Police are investigating why a New Jersey Transit bus burst into flames early this morning on Bergenline Avenue.

No passengers were aboard a #84 bus bound for Jersey City when it suddenly caught fire and stalled at 85th Street, NJ Transit spokeswoman Courtney Carroll said. The bus driver was able to escape unharmed, Carroll said.

“The bus is being considered a total loss,” she said. “It was completely engulfed.”

Township police said the 7:20 a.m. fire happened early enough in the morning that traffic backup on the normally busy street was minimal.
