WEST PATERSON — A five-month, $1.3 million project to widen the exit ramp at the borough’s exit on Interstate 80 west will be finished on time next week, officials said.

Work on Exit 56 began in June and is scheduled to be “substantially completed” next Thursday, said Tim Greeley, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation. We’ll be opening up the new ramp with its new configuration by next week,” Greeley said Thursday. “For all intents and purposes for the local driving public, it will appear to be done.”

The project involved creating two lanes at the exit, along with a deceleration lane off the interstate. Drivers use the exit to go to West Paterson and Paterson.

Motorists have long complained about Exit 56, where many were forced to idle on the interstate for 15 minutes or more in order to exit.
