Baby unharmed after carjacking in Newark

20 11 2007

A gunman carjacked a BMW in Newark today and drove away before noticing a three-month-old in the back seat, police said.

The thief abandoned the silver BMW 740, and the infant was recovered unharmed, said Detective Todd McClendon, a Newark Police Department spokesman.

The BMW owner had parked the vehicle — with baby inside — outside a bodega on Bloomfield Avenue, near Branch Brook Park, and asked an employee to stand watch as she ducked into the store, police said.

The gunman emerged from another BMW at about 6:10 a.m., brandished his weapon and jumped behind the wheel, police said.

He soon noticed the child and ditched the stolen car less than a block away, then fled in the other BMW, driven by an accomplice, police said.by Joe Ryan/The Star-Ledger
