State Introduces Vote-By-Mail Program

12 10 2009

mailMOUNT LAUREL — New Jersey voters have a new way to cast their ballots this year.

The state has replaced its absentee ballots with a “vote by mail” program.

That means voters do not need to give a reason why they’re not voting in person. Instead of requesting ballots one election at a time, they can ask to be sent ballots for all future elections.

Public Advocate Ron Chen says this removes the barriers to vote for those with jobs, health conditions or transportation issues that makes it tricky to get to the polls.

State election officials say there are safeguards to prevent fraud in the new system.

No matter how they vote, Tuesday is last day for new voters to register and be eligible to participate in the Nov. 3 election.
