FBI Newark Violent Crimes Fugitive Task ForceNEWARK — A veteran Port Authority police officer has been arrested and charged in a fraud scheme involving a cooperating witness for the government

The FBI says 50-year-old Michael Palermo used a witness whom he had used in previous investigations to pull off the fraud scheme.

Det. Palermo sued several companies for defective work on his house and allegedly had the cooperating witness write a bogus receipt for the repair work. The FBI says Palermo was awarded $50,000 from one lawsuit even though he had never paid for the repair work.

Palermo, a Jackson resident, has worked for the Port Authority for more than 16 years and was a member of a Newark-based FBI task force that investigates violent crimes and major thefts.

Special Agent in Charge Weysan Dun says no investigations involving the witness were compromised.
