Israel Erlander [PCJN Note: The Record’s typo, actual name is Erlanger] opened this pleasant, well-stocked shop six years ago when he saw a need for a hosiery store in the area.

But he soon expanded it to include other hard-to-find items such as school uniforms and special-occasion clothing for boys and girls.

In his heavily Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, that includes hats, snoods and scarves for women; dressy socks, hair accessories and modest dresses and skirts for girls in sizes 4 to 16; white button-down shirts and dark slacks for boys up to size 8; and fancy robes for girls and women.

Erlander [sic] also added to the mix seasonal items such as camp trunks and umbrellas.

Socks of all styles for the whole family still are the staple stock in trade, available in sizes 4-5 to 9-11. There is a wide selection of pantyhose, ranging from $1.99 to $18.50; tights are $2.99 to $12.99.

Parents can buy a typical girl’s school uniform, consisting of a pleated skirt, blouse and knee socks, for no more than $42 (including a headband).

There is a makeshift fitting room in the back and a few toys in the front for impatient toddlers accompanying their parents.

I found a package of small men’s Hanes V-neck undershirts, which weren’t available at Target or Sears the last time I checked. This is one example of how mom and pop stores sometimes top the big box.
